Thoughts on Enrolling New People
into Your Internet
Business!
This is an article I published a
short time ago to promote the Discount Home Shopping Club.
Well, today
let me address the biggest question that came from all of you. How do you sign
people up.
The most often heard of response that has come across my desk
since joining the club is "Jim, I have placed many ads, but I get little
response".
Now let us consider the real world.
1. How many
advertisements are their on the Internet? Millions!
2. What are the odds
that someone is going to respond to your ad? That is a good question. Those who
have been successful in bringing in new clubshop member have to look at their
success rate in converting these folks in to VIPs.(Paying Members) For the most
part, as I look at the lines of sponsorship, I see a vast majority of those
folks who have not converted to a membership. By way of checking up on your
self, and your progress. Go count the number of free members that you have
sponsored, and then count the number of VIP's. Divide the VIP members by the
free members and come up with a percentage. That helps track if you are
successful. My percentage is 33%. It will be interesting to know how some of you
are doing.
3. Now if your percentage is 15% or lower, perhaps you need
to reevaluate your methods. Keep in mind that it is advisable to spend time
training your key VIP members to become successful leders. It does no good to
talk someone into being a VIP, and then drop the ball in training them.
4. If you are happy with your percentage of folks getting involved, then
keep doing what you are doing. I am not happy with mine, and will shoot for 50%.
I believe in setting goals for myself. I hope you do. In my first three months,
I made many mistakes, and many of the 67% who did not sign up are still
interested, because I correspond with them regularly. I like America Online
because it has a buddy list. All my folks are on it, and I keep it on the
desktop at all times. I see someone on line, and say I say Hi. I let them know
briefly how I am doing, and offer my help to them.
5. Most of my ad
contacts have come in the personal section of AOL and Yahoo, and other sites
that list personals. Here is the ad I use.
"I have been very successful
in the business world, and at age 60, sitting back, and using my knowledge and
my mistakes in life to help others. My areas of expertise, are in home based
businesses, specializing in all kinds of areas. I also am a building contractor
and real estate investor.
My kids are grown, and I hate TV. So give me a
shout and let's talk. Read my AOL profile for more information. You can IM me,
email me, or visit me in my room on AOL, Titled "Ask a Millionaire". Put me on
your buddy list and click locate."
6. As I evaluate ads versus direct contact with
folks, I have to vote for the latter. My success so far is building a belief
system into people's lives, that this business will work, and create long term
residual income for them. Most people perceive that my life is a bed or roses.
In essence, I am just like most everyone else in the world, with my own set of
problems. But I have learned to look at these problems not as set backs in my
life, but opportunities for growth. If you have a half of glass of water in
front of you, you can look at it two ways. It is half full....or it is half
empty! What is the difference. The difference is how you look at things in life.
Is your life empty or is it full. Money or financial security does not make you
happy. Many men have died rich, and unfulfilled in life, because they based
their life around making money. Real fulfillment in life revolves around giving
of yourself to people, with no expectation that they are going to give back.
When it does come back to you, though, it makes you feel real good inside. The
Greatest Teacher in the world once said, "Give and it shall be given to you". It
really does work.
7. So back to the nuts and bolts about how I find
people. If you have not read My Chat Room
Primer please do so when you have time. It is geared toward AOL chat
rooms, but works anywhere on line. Now I continue to experiment with different
methods to reach people. Most servers have a place to search for individuals and
AOL has the perfect place, in searching out profiles. You can access the search
file at the top of your screen under people. Then just type in a subject, like
money, success, MLM, business, or whatever you want and up will pop 100 names.
Then there is a little red arrow denoting if they are on line. I just access
their profile, and send them an instant message about something in their profile
that I can identify with or that I can ask them a question about. Most people
will talk to you if you are nice. Sometimes I never mention this business the
first time I talk to them. You need to establish a relationship with someone
before you barge into their lives with another business opportunity. Usually
when I am done, I will ask them if I can send them a two page letter about
myself, and in it I will tell them about the DHSC. I always give them an out, to
come back and talk to me, even if they are not interested in the club. By
building a data base of new people you know, you are increasing your business
prospects for the future. I will copy an interesting conversation with some of
these folks, and show you how I do it. It is really rather easy.
8. Now,
if you read my personal profile letter, you will remember that I used to sell
Kirby Vacuum Cleaners in 1971 after I got out of the US Air Force. Now picture
this scene. I go to the newspaper and put an ad in. Kirby Vacuum Cleaners for
sale. Best Cleaner on the Market. Call me for a free Demo. Wow, if I do that, I
bet the phone will ring off the hook. ......Ha Ha. I will still be sitting there
waiting. So how did I become one of the top salesman in town. I picked a nice
middle class street, and got nicely dressed up, and knocked on doors. And you
know what, the first lady slammed the door in my face, and I quit. I said "This
won't work". But you know me better than that. I knocked on ten doors, and
finally got in the tell my story. Scared me to death, I forgot half of what I
was trained to tell them, but I told them this was my first demonstration, and
did not play any stupid games with them. Guess, what??? They didn't buy it. Wow!
I am gonna quit for sure now. But maybe I will try once more. I did, and I did
and I did. And still hold the record in Virginia Beach for selling six in one
day.
Here is the simple principle folks
o ) (o
MTP BB TO BB
Meet twenty people belly button to belly button every
day.
Face to face confrontation is the way to go. If
you are afraid to do this, so is everyone else. I could tell you some wild
stories about door to door sales. But I kept at it till I learned. You might not
be able to do twenty in one day. You might take a week to do that. Or a month.
But right now start keeping track of the people you talk to. At a later mail, I
will teach you how to Manage your business by establishing goals. It is called
Managing by Objectives. If you know that you have to talk to 10 people to get
one to sign up, then you know what you have to do to make this biz work. My
ratio is one out of two or three at the most, but I have a lot of experience, so
one out of ten is not bad if you are just starting. But please do start.
Well enough for today.
Good hunting.
