In the January 1999 issue of Success
Magazine, there is an excellent article about a Ten Year Plan for the future. It
is written by James Morrow, who profiles Candice Carpenter, who in 1995, was a
43 year old single mom, with neither computer nor Internet savvy. She learned
fast and became CEO of an on-line company with 200 employees. You can read her
bio in the magazine.
In his article he also wrote, "What you'll need to
know to survive the brave new world of the coming decade."
He also wrote,
" The promise of the 21st Century: Frictionless global markets, lowered trade
barriers, and seamless computer networks come together to create a new era of
efficient and lucrative commerce." He further states, "HOT MARKETS, With money
and labor secured, which markets promise the best returns in the years ahead?
The most important trend in the world economy these days remains the growth of
high technology. Just as the past few years have been defined by the explosion
of the Internet and the presence of the personal computer as a household
appliance, the coming decade will see continued high-tech growth. This growth
will take place, though, in an environment marked by a greater degree of
skepticism and sobriety than in the previous few years in the sector.
The big difference is that companies that make it big in the next 10
years will have to prove their worth and value to both consumers and investors.
...Demonstrated performance is the name of the ...game."
So, fellow
business associates, my perception of the Internet Explosion is this. We are
sitting on a gold mine. But prospecting for gold is tough work. It does not jump
out of the mine by itself. You have to chip away at "hard rocks" (Skeptical
people) and slowly and sometimes painfully, pan for the bits of gold that are in
the mine. Old time prospectors had a vision and stayed with that hard job for
years before striking that vein. Doing business on the net is not that hard. The
gold is visible. You just have to learn how to mine it. We have the tools, learn
to use them.
